Ilmen Slavs - Ilmenislavs

[Establishment of the Nation]
According to the oldest Russian chronicle, the Tale of Bygone Years, compiled in the early 12th century, in the mid-9th century, the powerful East Slavic tribe Polyanin had settled in the middle reaches of the Dnieper River and created a small state centered in Kiev. In the upper reaches, the Krivichi tribe was centered in Smolensk, and further north, the Ilmen Slav tribe of Novgorod was influential, while the Porochanins and others were in Polotsk, and they maintained loose ties through common language, customs, beliefs, and trade activities. Early East Slavic cities such as Kiev and Novgorod were the centers of tribal unity, and at the same time, they were also key locations on the long-distance trade routes (the so-called Varangian roads) of the Dnieper and Volga river systems that connected the Baltic Sea with the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea.
