...Four species of cranes are endemic to Africa: Bugeranus carunculatus , A. paradisea , Balearica pavonina (illustration), and Balearica regulorum . Common cranes and Demoiselle cranes also spend the winter here. In addition, two species of cranes, the Sandhill crane and the Whooping crane, G. americanus , live in North America, and two species, the Sarus crane and the Australian crane, G. rubicundus , live in Australia. In China, cranes are considered to be fairy birds connected to immortals because of their noble posture, flight through the sky, and pure cries. There are even stories of immortals, such as the Duke of Su Xian in the Shen Xian Biography, who transformed into a crane and returned to his hometown.
