Japanese: イシガメ(石亀) - イシガメ

A general term for freshwater turtles that are the most turtle-like of the Mauremys genus in the Batagur subfamily of the family Eridulidae. It includes four species, including the Japanese pond turtle. The carapace is not very high and has dull ridges, and both the plastron and the bridge connecting the carapace and plastron are well developed. It is a plain brown turtle with no conspicuous patterns on the carapace or head and neck. Its hind legs are well-developed and it is an adept swimmer, but it is also agile on land. It lives in ponds and slow-flowing rivers, and the Japanese pond turtle can sometimes be seen in shallow mountain streams.

ヌマガメ科バタグールガメ亜科イシガメ属Mauremysに属するもっともカメらしい淡水性カメ類の総称。ニホンイシガメなど4種が含まれている。背甲はあまり高くなくてにぶい隆条があり，腹甲も，背甲と腹甲を連結する橋(ブリッジ)もともに発達している。褐色系のじみなカメで，甲や頭頸部には目だつ模様がない。後肢の水かきが発達して泳ぎが巧みであるが，陸上の行動もすばしこい。池沼や流れの緩やかな川にすみ，ニホンイシガメでは浅い渓流に見られることもある。
