Phylum Cnidaria, Class Hydrozoa, Order Leptothecata, Family Catocalidae. Forms feathery colonies 4-5cm tall. The trunk has many regular nodes, and from each node twigs emerge alternately on the left and right in an almost uniform plane. Each colony is sexed; in females, the tip of the reproductive capsule extends like a neck and has a truncated opening, while in males, the tip gradually tapers and has a small hole. Found attached to pebbles and shells on the shallow seabed south of central Honshu. Widely distributed in temperate and tropical waters of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans, and the Mediterranean. The species of the Catocalidae or Catocalidae genus are sometimes collectively called Catocalidae. (→ Cnidaria, Hydrozoa, Invertebrates)

刺胞動物門ヒドロ虫綱レプトテカータ目ハネガヤ科。高さ 4～5cmの羽状の群体をつくる。幹は規則正しい多数の節からなり，各節から小枝が左右交互にほぼ一平面上に出ている。群体によって雌雄が異なり，雌では生殖莢の先端が頸状に伸び切断形の開孔をもつが，雄では先端がしだいに細くなり，小孔をもつ。本州中部以南の浅海底の小石，貝殻などに付着している。太平洋，インド洋，大西洋，地中海の温帯海域や熱帯海域に広く分布している。なお，ハネガヤ科あるいはハネガヤ属の種を総称してハネガヤと呼ぶこともある。（→刺胞動物，ヒドロ虫類，無脊椎動物）
