When the dead are placed in a coffin, a six-mon coin with a hole is placed in a paper bag worn around the neck. Six copper coins or paper cut into the shape of coins (shisen) are placed inside. It is said that this is the fare for the dead to cross the Sanzu River. The six paths refer to the six journeys the dead take: hell, hungry ghosts, animals, asuras, humans, and heaven. The six path coins are said to be travel money, offerings to Jizo Bodhisattva, who enables the six paths, or the magical power of the metal to drive away evil spirits.
