A literary movement started in late 17th-century Italy by poets who had gathered in Rome from all over the country. Led by Cresimbeni and Gravina, they rejected the eloquence and pretense of Baroque literature, and sought to restore naturalness and simplicity to poetry, especially using pastoral poetry as a model. The movement quickly spread throughout Italy, but after the middle of the 18th century it lost its initial significance, and with the rise of the Enlightenment and Romanticism it came under heavy criticism and declined. Other representative poets include Maggi, Metastasio, and Menzini. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
