Mass selection - shuudansenbatsu (English spelling)

Japanese: 集団選抜 - しゅうだんせんばつ（英語表記）mass selection

This is one of the selection methods used in crop and livestock breeding (breeding), and is different from individual and lineage selection in that it maintains a selected population as a group. It is one of the selection procedures that was originally carried out in separation breeding, which is different from cross breeding, and was devised for outcrossing animals and plants, but is now applied to various breeding situations. First, the original variety is cultivated in a group and natural crossbreeding is allowed to occur between the individuals. Several superior individuals are selected from these and their seeds are mixed to cultivate the next generation.

作物･家畜の品種改良(育種)で実施している選抜方法の一つで，個体選抜や系統選抜と違い，集団として選抜個体群を維持していく方法をいう。もともと交雑育種法とは異なる分離育種法で行われてきた選抜操作の一つで，他殖性動植物のために考案されたものであるが，現在は種々の育種の場面に応用されている。まず原品種を集団栽培して個体間で自然交雑をさせる。その中から優良個体をいくつか選び，それらの種子を混ぜて次世代を養成する。
