Japanese: 積木 - つみき

A toy for young children that is made by stacking pieces of wood or plastic objects of various shapes. It is also used as a teaching material for young children and elementary school children, and the first educational toy was the "Gift" invented by the German educator Froebel in 1838. Other well-known toys include those invented by the Italian woman educator Montessori, the "Hill Blocks" by the American woman educator Hill, and the plastic Lego.

種々の形状の木片，プラスチック製立体などを積み重ね，さまざまな形を作る幼児玩具(がんぐ)。幼児，低学年児童の教材にも用いられ，教育玩具としては1838年ドイツのフレーベルが創案した〈恩物〉が最初。イタリアの女性教育家モンテッソリの考案したもの，米国の女性教育家ヒルの〈ヒル積木〉，プラスチック製のレゴなどが著名。
