Java is an abstract noun formed by adding the prefix ke- and the suffix -n to Jawa (or Jawi), and is a cultural geographical concept meaning "Javanese" and "the area inhabited by the Javanese people." Geographically, it consists of the areas of Surakarta (Solo), where the Mataram Kingdom's Kraton (royal palace) was located, the Negoro and Negoro Agung regions of Yogyakarta, Kedu, Banyumas, Madiun, and the Moncho-Negoro region of Kediri. It is divided into the eastern tip of Java (Ujung Timur), where Javanese and Madurese people live together, the coastal area (Pasisir), where Islamic influence was strong, and West Java (Sunda), where the Sundanese people live.
