Roy, Claude
Born: August 28, 1915 in Paris
[Died] December 13, 1997. French poet, critic and novelist. His real name was Claude Orland. He started out working for the right-wing newspaper Action Française, but was influenced by L. Aragon and became a Communist and participated in the resistance. He left the party in 1956. With a lively, intelligent style and a clear, honest attitude, he was active in a wide range of writing. His main works include the poetry collection Un seul poème (1954), the novels La Nuit est un manteau des pauvres (48), Le Malheur d'aimer (58), the critique Aragon (45), and the autobiographical essays Moi je (69) and Nous (72).

[Died] June 15, 2000. Vezelay, France. French novelist. Served in the Air Force for many years. Wrote humanistic novels about war. Won the Renaudeau Prize for La Vallée heureuse (1946). Other works include La Bataille de Dien Bien Phu (1963), Le Voyage en Chine (1965), and a six-part series depicting various aspects of Algeria (1968-1975). In 1958, he was awarded the Grand Prix de Literature by the Académie Française for his work as a writer up to that point.

Died September 26, 1950. Milan, French painter. After learning painting from his father, he went to Paris and studied under J. Laurens from 1904. Influenced by Fauvist painters and poets such as G. Apollinaire, he worked on theater decorations, but in 1925 he joined the Surrealist movement. He produced paintings with a unique style that combined construction, fantasy, and precision.
