...Gonçalves, the court painter to Afonso V (reigned 1438-81), was the leader of the Lisbon School, and his "Polyptych of St. Vincent" (6 paintings) is a major document of the maritime nation of Portugal, and one of the greatest masterpieces of 15th-century European painting. During the Renaissance, Italian influence also spread, and portrait painters such as Cristóvão de Morais (active in the second half of the 16th century) were active, and in the 18th and 19th centuries, Francisco Vieira Portuense (1765-1806) and Domingos de Sequeira (1768-1837), known as the "Portuguese Goya," were born.
