This is a Jodo sect temple located in Banba, Maibara-cho, Sakata-gun, Shiga Prefecture (formerly Banba-juku on the Nakasendo road). It is said to have begun in 1284 (7th year of the Koan era) when Ikko Shunsho (Ikko Shunshou), the local lord Doi Saburo Motoyori (Douji), rebuilt an old temple that was originally located at the foot of Mt. Maidenhead and named it Hachiyo-san Renge-ji. Ikko Shunsho was a disciple of Ryochu of the Chinzei school of the Jodo sect of Buddhism, and was a wandering saint from a different lineage to Ippen, the founder of the Ji sect of Buddhism. However, since they lived in roughly the same era and their deeds were similar, the two were often confused, and in the early modern period it was considered one of the 12 schools of the Ji sect of Buddhism, and was the head temple of the Ikko school.
