A town in Akkeshi County, eastern Hokkaido. Most of the town is plateau, facing Akkeshi Bay and Lake Akkeshi, and the Nemuro Main Line runs through it. Fishing is thriving, with salmon and trout being caught, and dairy farming is also carried out. The seabird breeding grounds on Daikoku Island are a natural monument. Kokutaiji Temple is located here. In June 1993, Lake Akkeshi and Bekanbeushi Marsh were registered as Ramsar Convention wetlands.
