Wild species include the African wild ass Equus asinus (there are subspecies such as the Nubian wild ass E. a . africanus (illustration) and the Somali wild ass E. a . somalicus ) that lives in North Africa and parts of East Africa, the Asian wild ass E. hemionus (there are subspecies such as the Kulan and Kyang) that lives in Mongolia, Tibet and Syria, and the domesticated donkey E. a . asinus , which is a domesticated African wild ass.
