Nonaqueous solvent

Japanese: 非水溶媒 - ひすいようばい（英語表記）nonaqueous solvent

In a broad sense, it refers to all solvents other than water, but it usually refers to inorganic liquids such as liquid ammonia, liquid sulfur dioxide, liquid hydrogen sulfide, liquid hydrogen fluoride, liquid hydrogen cyanide, etc. These solvents exhibit properties similar to water in that (1) they have a high ability to dissolve not only various inorganic compounds but also organic compounds, (2) they ionize only slightly even in their pure state, (3) they have the ability to ionize solutes, (4) they undergo solvolysis, and (5) they exhibit amphoteric properties, i.e., they act as a base with strong acids and as an acid with strong bases.

広い意味では水以外のすべての溶媒をさすが，普通は液体アンモニア，液体二酸化硫黄，液体硫化水素，液体フッ化水素，液体シアン化水素などの無機の液体をいう。これらの溶媒は，(1) 種々の無機化合物だけでなく有機化合物を溶解する力が大きく，(2) 純粋な状態でもわずかしか電離せず，(3) 溶質に対する電離能力を有し，(4) 加溶媒分解を起し，(5) 両性現象すなわち強酸に対しては塩基として働き，強塩基に対しては酸として働くなどの点で水と似た性質を示す。
