Around this time, bridge-building missions led by Christian monks built stone arch bridges all over Europe. Among them, the Pont Saint-Bénezet (1185, commonly known as the Avignon Bridge) in Avignon, southern France, still remains in part, and the chapel on the pier suggests the trends in medieval bridges that followed. While Roman stone arches were semicircular, around this time flat circular arches and pointed arches inherited from the Saracen civilization also began to be seen. …
