Soviet writer. Mother of writer Aksyonov. Arrested in 1937 during the Stalin era purges, she was falsely accused of joining a "counter-revolutionary terrorist group" and spent the next 18 years in a labor camp (gulag). Her account of her experiences, "Bright Night, Dark Day" (originally titled "Rough Journey"), could not be officially published in the Soviet Union, but was widely read in the form of underground publications (samizdat) and was also published as a book abroad (volume 1, 1967, volume 2, 1979, both in Milan, Italy). This record of the process of "an idealist who innocently believed in communism" growing spiritually amidst harsh trials is not only an accusation of historical shame, but also an excellent literary work supported by delicate sensibility.
