Lérins Abbey - Lérins Abbey

A monastery on the island of Lerinum, off the coast of the French Mediterranean city of Cannes. It was founded in the early 5th century by the senatorial nobleman Honoratus, modelled on the monasticism he had encountered during a pilgrimage to the East. The original monastic rules are unknown, but the monastic life consisted of both communal and dispersed residences. Many of the monks were senatorial nobles from northeastern Gaul who had fled to southern Gaul during the Germanic Migration. In addition to prayer and handiwork, they studied the works of the Church Fathers and classical authors, and among them came the bishops of cities along the Rhône and Saône rivers, mainly in Provence.
