A unit of length used in astronomy to express the distance between stars and other celestial bodies outside the solar system. The symbol is pc. 1pc is the distance that creates a parallax of 1 arcsecond for 1 AU (astronomical unit), which is about 206,265 AU, about 3.2616 light years, and about 3.0857× ¹⁰¹⁶ m. Parsec is an abbreviation for parallax second. The distance to an object with a parallax of π seconds is (1/π) pc. For example, Sirius has a parallax of about 0.377 arcseconds, so it is about 2.64 pc away. The absolute magnitude of a star is the apparent brightness from a standard distance of 10 pc.
