Nakata Cave - Nakata Cave

Japanese: 中田横穴 - なかだよこあな

Located in Nakata, Hiranuma-no-uchi, Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, this decorated cave tomb (history) has colored murals on its walls, and was created in the late 6th century during the Late Kofun period. It was discovered in 1969 during road improvement work. It is carved into the tuffaceous sandstone of the north face of the hill, and has a unique shape with multiple chambers, measuring 6.67m in total length. The anterior chamber is smaller than the posterior chamber, has a square plan, and has a dome-shaped ceiling that is 2.28m high. Colored paintings are on the surrounding walls of the posterior chamber, and the motif is a unified series of triangular patterns made up of linked isosceles triangles.

福島県いわき市平沼ノ内中田に所在する古墳時代後期の6世紀末に形成された彩色壁画を有する装飾横穴墓(史)。1969年，道路改良工事中に発見された。丘陵北面の凝灰質砂泥岩にうがたれているが，複室構造を有する特殊な形態で，全長6.67mを測る。前室は後室に比べて小さく，平面形は方形を呈し，天井もドーム形となり，その高さは2.28mを有する。彩色画は後室の周壁に描出され，モティーフは二等辺三角形を連係化した連続三角文で統一されている。
