Land managed by public or private organizations is divided into certain plots, which are then leased to residents for a set period of time to cultivate crops and flowers. They are also called allotment gardens or small vegetable gardens. They were proposed in the 1830s by Leipzig physician DGM Schreber (1808-61) as a facility for weekend use necessary for the health of children, and are therefore also known as Schreber vegetable gardens. Later, during wartime, they were valued as a place for self-sufficiency in food. In recent years, their productive role has diminished, and they have become one of the most important urban green spaces in Western Europe, serving as a place of health and recreation for city residents.
