A Sumerian law code established by Lipit-Ishtar, the fifth king of the Kingdom of Isin, in the late 20th century BCE. The original was apparently inscribed on a stone monument, but only about one-third of the code and just under one-fifth of the legal portion (38 articles) have survived to this day in copies on clay tablets. This code is intermediate between the Code of Ur-Nammu and the Code of Hammurapi in terms of the date of its creation, its three-part structure of a preface, main text, and epilogue, and its criminal punishment laws. The preface states that, following the command of the gods, the king "in order to restore justice to the land and bring peace," exempted the inhabitants from debts and reduced the number of days of corvée.
