It is an important rock-forming mineral, a general term for a group of minerals that belong to the orthorhombic crystal system and have the chemical composition R 2 SiO 4 (where R is Mg, Fe, Mn, Ca, etc.). The end members are named forsterite (Mg 2 SiO 4 ), fayalite (Fe 2 SiO 4 ), tephroite (Mn 2 SiO 4 ), and monticellite (CaMgSiO 4 ) . Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |

重要な造岩鉱物の一つであり，斜方晶系に属し，化学組成はR2SiO4(ここでRはMg,Fe,Mn,Caなど)で表される一群の鉱物の総称である。端成分はフォルステライトforsterite(苦土カンラン石)Mg2SiO4，フェアライトfayalite(鉄カンラン石)Fe2SiO4，テフロアイトtephroite(テフロ石)Mn2SiO4とモンチセライトmonticellite CaMgSiO4と名付けられている。
