This is the principle of leverage. One of the features of FX (foreign exchange margin trading) is that it allows you to manage small amounts of capital by using this leverage. For example, let's say you deposit a margin of 100,000 yen and buy and sell foreign currency equivalent to 10,000 dollars. If 1 dollar = 110 yen at that time, you can manage dollars equivalent to 1.1 million yen with your capital of 100,000 yen. In this case, you are managing funds equivalent to 11 times the capital, which means you are leveraging 11 times. By leveraging, you can earn a high percentage of profit on your principal when the market moves in the same direction as you expect, but conversely, if the market moves against your expectations, you may incur a high percentage of loss on your principal.

テコの原理のことです。FX（外国為替保証金取引）では、このレバレッジを使うことによって小額の資金を運用できることが特徴のひとつです。たとえば、10万円の保証金を預け入れて、1万ドル相当の外貨を売買したといたします。そのとき1ドル＝110円だとすれば、10万円の元手で110万円相当のドルを運用できるわけです。この場合、元手に対して11倍に相当する資金を運用している、つまり11倍のレバレッジをかけていることになります。レバレッジをかけることにより、相場が思惑と同じ方向に動いたときには元本に対して高い割合の利益を得られることがありますが、逆に相場が思惑とは反対に動けば、元本に対して高い割合の損失が出ることもあります。
