The 11th Shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate. Born on December 15, 12th year of Bunmei. Son of Ashikaga Masatomo, the Horikoshi Kubo. Originally, he was not in a position to succeed the Shogunate, and first entered the subtemple Kogen-in as a katsujiki of Tenryu-ji Temple, and called himself Seiko. After returning to secular life, he first took the name Yoshito, then Yoshitaka, and in 1502 (Bunki 2) Yoshizumi. After Shogun Yoshitane launched the Second Rokkaku Conquest and campaigned in Kawachi (Osaka Prefecture), he came into conflict with Kanrei Hosokawa Masamoto, and was supported as Shogun in a coup d'état by Masamoto in 1493 (Meio 2). However, he had little real power, and as the Hosokawa clan's autocratic government took over the shogunate, Yoshizumi's authority extended only to the Kinai region and nearby provinces. In 1508 (Eisho 5), due to internal conflict within the Hosokawa clan and Yoshitane's advance to Kyoto, Yoshizumi was driven out of Kyoto and stripped of his title of Shogun. He died on August 14, Eisho 8, in Okayama, Omi (Shiga Prefecture). [Akira Imatani] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
