When an object of representative length L (for example, the diameter of a sphere) is in a flow with viscosity μ, density ρ, and velocity U, the Reynolds number R is defined as R = ρUL/μ. The Reynolds number is extremely important in characterizing flows. When the Reynolds number is small, the flow is orderly (laminar flow), but when the Reynolds number exceeds a critical value (called the critical Reynolds number), the flow transitions to an irregularly fluctuating turbulent flow.
