Charadriiformes, Scolopacidae. Total length 18cm. Summer plumage (→ plumage) is gray-black on the head, neck and back, with chestnut vertical stripes on the back. The throat is white, the neck to upper chest is chestnut, and the belly is white. The summer plumage is generally brighter and more beautiful in females than in males. Winter plumage is dark gray on the head and back, with white face and belly. The toes of the feet are separated, and each toe is a petal with a leaf-shaped fin. It is a skilled swimmer, circling on the water surface and creating a vortex around its body to feed on small creatures that rise to the surface. It breeds in Eurasia, northern North America, and southern Greenland, and spends the winter in the Arabian Sea, the ocean off the Pacific coast from Central America to South America, and from central Indonesia to western Melanesia. In Japan, it can be seen in coastal waters, seaside lakes and rivers, and rice fields during the migration season. The roles of males and females during the breeding season in phalaropes are different from those of other birds; for example, only the male incubates the eggs.
