Grand Prince of Moscow. At the age of eight, he became Grand Prince Vladimir of Moscow, and in 1380, at the Battle of Kulikovo, he defeated the large army of the Golden Horde for the first time, becoming one of the national heroes in Russian history. He was nicknamed Donskoy (meaning "of the Don River") because the battle took place in a tributary of the Don River. He was the grandson of Ivan Kalita, and in his youth he was mentored and assisted by the nobleman, Metropolitan Alexis of Russia (c. 1295-1378), and was particularly influenced by Alexis's life, which focused on the unification of Russia and the defense of the Moscow Metropolitanate (opposed the establishment of the new Metropolitanate of Kiev).

モスクワ大公。8歳でウラジーミル･モスクワ大公となり，1380年，クリコボの戦で初めてキプチャク･ハーン国の大軍を打ち破り，ロシア史上の国民的英雄の一人となった。その戦場がドン川支流の流域であったため，ドンスコイ(〈ドン川の〉の意)とあだ名された。イワン･カリタの孫で，青少年期に貴族出身のロシア府主教アレクセイ(1295ころ‐1378)の指導･補佐をうけ，特にロシアの統一とモスクワの府主教座擁護(キエフ府主教座新設に反対)に努めたアレクセイの生涯から大きな影響をうけた。
