Born: October 12, 1848
An American Board (Congregationalist) missionary who came to Japan during the Meiji period. In 1875, he came with his wife Florence in response to a request from Niijima Jo, and served as a professor at Doshisha University for over 52 years from its inception. His specialty was biblical theology, and he published a valuable commentary on the entire New Testament. He was an erudite, and in his early years he lectured on subjects such as mathematics, physics, and astronomy. Until he retired and returned to Japan in 1928, he introduced and criticized socialism, communism, and anarchism, saying, "Bible in my right hand, economics in my left hand." His liberal economics, which exceeded the academic standards of the time, systematized a "remedy" for the problem of poverty, and he became a pioneering advocate of Meiji social and economic thought and new historical studies. <References> Sumiya Etsuji, "The Life of Dr. Learned," and "The Origins of Japanese Economics" by Sumiya Etsuji.

明治期に来日したアメリカン・ボード(会衆派)宣教師。明治8(1875)年新島襄の要請に応え妻フローレンスと来日,草創期から52年余り同志社大学の教授を務めた。専門は聖書神学で貴重な新約聖書全巻注釈書を刊行。博学で初期に数学,物理,天文学などを講じる。昭和3(1928)年退任帰国するまで「右手に聖書,左手に経済学」と,社会主義,共産主義,無政府主義を紹介・批判し,当時の学界水準を超えたその自由主義経済学は貧困問題の「救治策」を体系化,明治の社会経済思想,新歴史学の先駆的提唱者となった。<参考文献>住谷悦治『ラーネッド博士伝』,同『日本経済学の源流』
