? - 159 BCE King of Pergamum. Reigned 197-159 BC. Eldest son of Attalus I. Inherited his father's pro-Roman political line. Expanded the kingdom by adding the Syrian and Asia Minor territories that had been defeated by Rome in 188 BC. However, during the Third Macedonian War (171-168 BC), he secretly negotiated peace with Macedonia, which earned him the distrust of Rome. Like his father, he was a patron of Greek art, and many of the great buildings of the kingdom, including the famous "Great Altar of Zeus" and the Great Library, were built and completed by him.
