King of Pergamum. Reigned 197-159 BC. Eldest son of Attalus I. Inherited his father's pro-Roman political line. Expanded the kingdom by adding the Syrian and Asia Minor territories that had been defeated by Rome in 188 BC. However, during the Third Macedonian War (171-168 BC), he secretly negotiated peace with Macedonia, which earned him the distrust of Rome. Like his father, he was a patron of Greek art, and many of the great buildings of the kingdom, including the famous "Great Altar of Zeus" and the Great Library, were built and completed by him.

ペルガモン王。在位，前197‐前159年。アッタロス1世の長男。父の親ローマ的な政治路線を継承。前188年ローマに敗れたシリアの小アジア領を加え，王国を拡大した。だが第3次マケドニア戦争(前171‐前168)では秘密裏にマケドニアと和平交渉をもち，ローマの不信を買った。父に似て，ギリシア芸術の保護者であり，有名な〈ゼウスの大祭壇〉，大図書館をはじめとする王国の大建築物は彼によって整備･完成されたものが多い。
