Ashitaka - Tashidaka

Japanese:
Ashitaka - Tashidaka

A type of salary instituted by the Edo Shogunate in 1723 (Kyoho 8). In principle, daimyo positions were not included, but a standard of salary was set for each of the Shogunate's major positions, and if the stipend of an employee in that position did not meet the standard, the employee was paid up to the standard amount only while in office. This enabled the Shogunate to promote talented people while avoiding the increase in the financial burden of hereditary stipends due to increases in stipends, and those who were selected for important positions were able to withstand the increase in various expenses due to promotion because they could receive a reasonable income while in office. However, this reform reduced the weight of hereditary stipends in the income of officials and changed the feudal stipend system. The scope of recipients of the payment of ashitaka was expanded in 1724, 1731, and 1738 (Genbun 3).
