Euric

Euric
?‐484
King of the Visigoths. Reigned 466-484. In the second half of the 5th century, as the Western Roman Empire was on the decline, he expanded his power from southwestern France to Provence and then to the Iberian Peninsula. He abolished his alliance with the Roman emperor and strengthened his independent tendencies, building the kingdom at its height. He was expected to play a powerful mediator among neighboring powers, and was praised by the proud Roman poet Sidonius Apollinaris as the strongest king in the Western world. The Codex Euricianus (c. 475), known as the oldest written law in the Germanic world, is said to have been compiled by Roman bureaucrats and to have been heavily influenced by Roman law, although it contains ancient customary law.
