There are two theories about the predecessor of the Psalter: one that emphasizes the Psalter as a personal prayer book most commonly used in the early Middle Ages, and the other that says it was modeled on the Breviary, a book of the daily office for clergy. The Breviary was once divided into several books, including the Bible, hymns, chantments, and prayer collections, but for various reasons and purposes, it was compiled into a single book at the Monte Cassino Abbey in the 12th century, and has since spread rapidly throughout Europe.
