Retin

Japanese: レチン
Retin
A Bolivian labor leader. Born to Lebanese immigrants, he became a worker in a tin mine owned by Patiño, the world's largest tin magnate. In Bolivia, tin miners, who make up 1% of the population, produce more than 90% of the total export value, and the mining union had great political influence, but it was dominated by the MNR (Nationalist Revolutionary Movement). Lechin became the leader of the mining union in 1945, and played a leading role in the Nationalist Revolution of 1952, when Paz Estensso, supported by the MNR, became president. He became chairman of the Bolivian General Confederation of Labor (COB), and was elected vice president of the Siles Suazo government that was established in 1956, where he advocated rapprochement with the Soviet Union. In 1964, he formed the left-wing National Revolutionary Party to oppose Paz Estensso, who was seeking a third term, and ran for president, but was defeated. He supported the military coup that took place in November of that year, but broke with the Barrientos government that had overthrown Paz the following year and went into exile in Chile. He returned to the country briefly, but returned to exile in Chile again in 1967.
