A crab of the family Portunidae (illustration) of Crustacea. It is especially tasty from winter to spring, and is indispensable in crab dishes. The origin of the name is unknown. The carapace is elongated and diamond-shaped, reaching a width of 25 cm. There are nine projections on the front edge of the carapace, the last of which protrudes long to the side. The last leg is flat, and by coordinated left and right movements, it can swim quickly and over long distances, which is why it is commonly called a "blue crab," including its closely related species. It is dark brown with a greenish tinge, with white markings on the rear of the carapace and on the claws, but in males the color is more blue, with the claws being particularly vivid.
