A machine that heats and stretches the tow (long fiber bundle) of synthetic fiber made by spinning, and then stretch-breaks it without disturbing the fiber arrangement to make slivers (short fiber bundles) instead of cutting the tow (long fiber bundles) made by spinning with a cutter to make staples (short fibers) for spinning. Machines like this are generally called converters, but there are also other types such as the Parlock type, which stretches the tow between two sets of rollers with different surface speeds and then stretch-breaks it, and the Pacific converter type, which uses a blade to perform push cutting.
