Yoshio Nakano

Born: August 2, 1903, Ehime
[Died] February 20, 1985. Tokyo critic and English literature scholar. After graduating from the University of Tokyo, he taught at a junior high school and a normal school before becoming an associate professor at the university in 1935 and a professor in 1948. In 1953, he resigned from the university because he felt he was not being given the financial support to concentrate on his research. His unconventional behavior attracted attention. In the same year, he became editor-in-chief of the magazine Heiwa and began to engage in free criticism. His activities were based on his specialty in English literature and rationalism based on an understanding of Western Europe, and he became involved in all postwar democratic movements, including the ban on atomic and hydrogen bombs, anti-security treaty, and progressive Tokyo government. His representative works include Lawrence of Arabia (1940), Literary Essays (1943), and Ashikaga Tokutomi Kenjiro (1972-1974, Daisetsu Jiro Prize). Other excellent translations include works by Shakespeare and Maugham, Gibbon's The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (vol. 4 of a planned 10 volumes, 76-85), and The Collected Works of Yoshio Nakano (vol. 11, 84-85).

評論家，英文学者。東京大学卒業後，中学，師範学校の教師を経て，1935年東大助教授，48年教授。 53年，研究に専念できる経済的処遇を与えられていないという理由で，大学を辞職。型破りな行動が話題となる。同年雑誌『平和』の編集長となり，自由な評論活動に入る。その活動の背景には専門の英文学と西欧理解に基づく合理主義があり，原水爆禁止，反安保，革新都政など，戦後民主主義運動のすべてにかかわることとなった。代表作『アラビアのロレンス』 (1940) ，『文学試論集』 (43) ，『蘆花徳冨健次郎』 (72～74，大仏次郎賞) など。また，シェークスピアやモームの諸作品，ギボンの『ローマ帝国衰亡史』 (10巻予定のうち4巻，76～85) などのすぐれた翻訳がある。ほかに『中野好夫集』 (11巻，84～85) 。
