A Muslim people living in northwestern Africa, a mixed ethnicity of Berbers and Arabs who invaded the Iberian Peninsula in the 8th century and settled there. As they came from what was then Mauritania, they were called Mauri in Latin, Moros in Spanish, and Moors in English and Dutch (the Spanish also called Muslims living in the southern Philippines Moros). Today, the term Moors refers to all Arabic-speaking Muslims who live in northwestern Africa, including Morocco and Mauritania (French for the country of the Moors). It can also refer to the people of Mauritania, where Moors make up 80% of the population. The idea that Moors are black was mistakenly spread by Shakespeare's play Othello, and Moors belong to the Caucasian Mediterranean group racially. Many Moors lead a nomadic lifestyle based in the Sahara Desert, and their main occupation is raising and trading livestock such as zebu cattle, sheep, goats, and camels.
