This mountain is located in the western part of Saitama Prefecture, on the border between Chichibu City and Yokoze Town in Chichibu County. It is 1,295 meters above sea level. It has been an object of worship since ancient times, with Mitake Shrine enshrined on the summit. There are several theories about the origin of the mountain's name, including that it was named Mukōsan because it can be seen beyond Chichibu, and that it is made up of Mesozoic and Paleozoic strata in Chichibu. It is famous for its abundance of limestone. At an altitude of around 800 meters, there are colonies of Chichibu-iwazakura (cherry blossoms), Miyamasukashiyuri (lilies), and other plants, and it has been designated a national natural monument as a special plant community of Mt. Buko limestone. Limestone is used as a cement material and is being mined by companies such as Chichibu Cement, Nippon Cement (the two companies merged in 1998 to become Taiheiyo Cement), and Mitsubishi Cement (now Mitsubishi Materials). This has changed the mountain's appearance and caused problems in terms of the landscape and nature conservation.
