Sensitizing dye - sensitizer

Japanese: 増感色素 - ゾウカンシキソ

A dye used to expand the wavelength range of sensitivity of silver halide photographic emulsions and electrophotographic photosensitive layers. Silver bromide and silver chloride, which are used as photosensitive materials in photographic film, and zinc oxide, which is used as photosensitive material in electrophotography, are sensitive to short-wavelength light in the visible range, i.e., blue light, but not to long-wavelength yellow or red light. In the case of general photography, if photographic film was only sensitive to blue light, unnatural-looking black-and-white photographs would be produced and color reproduction would be impossible.

ハロゲン化銀写真乳剤や電子写真感光層の感光波長域を広げる目的で使う色素。写真フィルムの感光物質として使う臭化銀，塩化銀，あるいは電子写真の感光物質に使う酸化亜鉛などは，単独では可視域の短波長の光，すなわち青い光には感光するが，長波長の黄や赤の色光には感光しない。一般写真撮影の場合に写真フィルムが青の光にしか感光しないならば，黒白写真においても不自然な感じの写真ができ，カラー写真の色再現は不可能になる。
