...It has long been used by local people in South America to treat amoebic dysentery, but in Europe, it has spread as a specific remedy for dysentery and diarrhea since the late 17th century when the Dutch physician Elvesius used it to treat the sons of Louis XIV. In addition to ipecac, the roots of C. acuminata Karst., native to Colombia, and C. emetica Pers., distributed from Guatemala to Bolivia, are also used as ipecac (false ipecac), although it is a different genus from the Rubiaceae family.
