…安定同位体として5種，放射性核種としては⁶⁵Geから^77mGeまでに11種が知られている。1871年D.I.メンデレーエフによりその存在が予言されエカケイ素と名づけられたが，86年にC.A.ウィンクラーによって硫銀ゲルマニウム鉱argyrodite(Ag₈GeS₆)から発見され，ドイツのラテン名Germaniaにちなんで命名された。ケイ素に似ているため，地殻中のケイ酸塩のケイ素と置換して広く存在し，また銅や亜鉛などを含む硫化鉱物や石炭の中にも含まれるが，ゲルマニウムを主体とする鉱物は少なく，地殻中の含有量は1万分の7％くらいである。…
