Menes - Menes (English spelling)

Menes - Menes (English spelling)

Date of birth and death unknown. The first king to unify ancient Egypt (reigned around 3000 BCE. There are other theories). He is thought to be the same person as the king named Narmer. Narmer's name is recorded in the famous "Narmer's Palette," and Menes' name is recorded in the Abydos King List and the Turin Papyrus. The unification project was started by King Scorpio of Upper Egypt, and unified up to the vicinity of the Delta region. King Menes probably ascended to the throne as his successor. He established his capital in Tis (corresponding to the vicinity of Abydos) in Upper Egypt, and completely conquered Lower Egypt (the pattern is shown in the "Narmer's Palette"), unifying all of Egypt. He also built a second royal capital, the "White Castle," at the southern end of the Delta region as a base for governing Lower Egypt. This later became the capital of ancient Egypt, Memphis.
