Laennec (English spelling) René Théophile Hyacinthe Laennec

French physician. Born in Quimper, Brittany, he went to Paris in 1801. He was trained by Corbizard and other renowned physicians at the Charité Hospital, and obtained his medical degree in 1804. He opened a practice for financial reasons, but in 1813 he also treated war wounded soldiers at the Salpétriel Hospital, and gained a reputation as a clinical physician, with many well-known patients. After he became director of Necker Hospital in 1816, he placed emphasis on pathological anatomical research, comparing the clinical symptoms of patients with the autopsy findings after death. It was here that he invented the auscultation method and invented the wooden stethoscope, and in 1819 published his immortal masterpiece, "Indirect Auscultation." In 1822, he became a clinical professor at the Charité Hospital and a professor at the Collège de France, and the following year in 1823, he became a member of the Academie des Medicines. He left the name of a type of liver cirrhosis to the public, "Laennec's cirrhosis."
