Toshiya Eto

Japanese: 江藤俊哉 - えとうとしや
Toshiya Eto

Violinist. Born in Tokyo. He started learning the violin from Suzuki Shinichi at the age of four. In 1939 (Showa 14), at the age of 12, he won first place in the Japan Music Competition, attracting attention. After graduating from the Tokyo Music School (now Tokyo University of the Arts) in 1948 (Showa 23), he formed a string quartet with Saito Hideo and others and performed as a chamber musician. He went to the United States and studied under Zimbalist at the Curtis Institute of Music in New York, making his debut at Carnegie Hall in 1951 while still a student. He graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music in 1952 and became a professor there. After returning to Japan in 1961 (Showa 36), he was active both at home and abroad as a soloist, and also taught the next generation of violinists at Toho Gakuen College, nurturing many internationally active violinists. Eto's virtuoso violin playing, with its rich volume and brilliant tone, contributed to the improvement of performance techniques using authentic European music as a model, and he became a leading figure in the Japanese music world after World War II. He received the Japan Art Academy Award in 1979 and became a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1987. He served as president of Toho Gakuen School of Music from 1997 to 2004.
