Daihi no Senrokubon - Daihi no Senrokubon

Japanese:
Daihi no Senrokubon - Daihi no Senrokubon

Yellow cover. One volume. Written by Shiba Zenko and illustrated by Kitao Masanobu (Sankyoden). Published in 1785 (Tenmei 5). The title is a play on the phrase "One Thousand and Six Radishes," reflecting the popularity of radish dishes, and the inscription reads "Homemade cooking/Only the rice porridge is needed." The story is about the Thousand-Armed Kannon, the principal image of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, who, due to the current economic downturn, seeks the help of a speculator to make a profit by lending out his thousand arms for rent. However, there is no clear plot to the story, and it instead depicts the comical acts that occur when people such as Taira Tadanori, who lost his right hand in the Genpei War, and an illiterate man, get help from the Kannon, and ends with Sakanoue no Tamuramaro firing a thousand arrows to defeat bandits. It is an unusually short work of just five sheets (10 pages), and was part of a project by the up-and-coming publisher Tsutaya Juzaburo, which brought together such leading authors of the time as Houseidou Kisanji and Santo Kyoden. Not only did it fully demonstrate Zenko's talent for humor, but it also became one of his masterpieces, and is known as the most kibyōshi-style story.
