Abbreviation for Password Authentication Protocol. A protocol for user authentication in PPP connections. The client sends the user name and password in plain text to the server, which then compares them with registered information to authenticate the user. Because the passwords are sent in plain text, there is a risk that the user name and password may be stolen if the network is eavesdropped on.
