Inland current - Utsumiryu

A school of early modern spearmanship (key spear). The founder of the school was Samon Utsumi Shigetsugu (?-1648). Samon was the son of Furuya Kizaemon, a retainer of Gamou Ujisato in his native Omi (Shiga Prefecture), and learned the nine-foot-handled key spear, which is said to have been invented by Toda Seigen (Tomita Seigen) of the Nakajo school, from Nakahori Hikoemon Nyudo Gensei, and was praised for his intricate technique. He first served Ishida Mitsunari, but after the Battle of Sekigahara (1600), he was employed by Todo Takatora with a stipend of 500 koku. During the Summer Siege of Osaka, he was credited with taking three enemy heads and capturing two alive, and was given an additional stipend of 500 koku, 1000 koku, and appointed as a gunner. He changed his name to Rokurozaemon, and later to Shosetsu. His eldest son, Kyubei Shigeyuki, succeeded him, taking the name Utsumi-ryu, and for generations the family served as the master of the Tsu Domain in Ise (Mie Prefecture). The eighth generation, Shigemune, who lived at the end of the Edo period, wrote works such as "Shukokahi," "Koden Shukai," and "Rozoron." Furthermore, in the section on spearmanship in "Bugeikoden," it says that he learned from the Uchimi-ryu school, its founder Uchimi Sanai, and Tomita Gosei, but this is thought to be a misprinting of a katakana character.
