A one-act play by Swedish author Strindberg. Written in 1888, it premiered in Paris in 1889. Julie, the proud daughter of a count, has a masculine temperament. Jean, the servant, is obedient on the surface, but is calculating and tough in his heart, trying to survive. After the conflict and struggle between men and women, and between the upper and lower classes, Julie destroys herself. The play is based on a true story, and the author himself gave it the subtitle "Naturalistic Tragedy." It also exudes a sweet emotion with pantomime and ballet scenes set during the midsummer festival under the white nights. There was an exchange of opinions with the publisher about the content of the play, fearing the eyes of the authorities, and it was rewritten into its current form. It was performed in Sweden in 1904. The lengthy preface is interesting, containing the origin of the work's creation, the author's intentions, his views on theater, as well as specific instructions on music, lighting, etc., and is an important document in the history of modern theater. Of Strindberg's many plays, this is the one that is most familiar to Japanese readers.
