[Born] Daoguang 17 (1837) [Died] 1897 A Chinese diplomat and man of letters in the late Qing Dynasty. Born in Zunyi County, Guizhou Province. Worked as a secretary in various European countries, and served as an envoy to Japan from 1881. Working under Zeng Guofan, he valued the Tongcheng school and was known as a scholar of classical literature along with Wu Ruolin and others, but his prose writings on "westernization" and depictions of foreign scenery went beyond that category. During his stay in Japan, he also published the "Guiyu Congshu," a reprint of books lost in China that had been collected in Japan by his subordinate Yang Shoujing. His works include "Zhuozunyuan Congshu." Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
